FY '02 Appropriations
Conference to Meet
The Congressional conference committee slated to iron out differences 
between the House and Senate versions of the FY '02 
Labor/HHS/Education appropriations bill is expected to meet this 
week. No word on when the final agreement is anticipated or when it 
could reach the House and Senate Floors.

Grant Helps ME
Adult Learners
Go To College
Maine's Marshwood Adult Education program nailed down a grant last 
month to help graduates of adult education programs and other 
nontraditional students go to college. The $22,500 grant, renewable 
for five years from the Nellie Mae Foundation will help prepare the 
learners for postsecondary classes. Funds will fill in gaps in 
learners' knowledge, help them access financial aid, prepare college 
applications and explore career choices. Contact Marshwood at

AZ Teacher Named
Family Literacy
Teacher of the Year
Gwendolyn Paul of Coolidge, AZ is the 2002 Toyota Family Literacy 
Teacher of the Year, the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) 
and Toyota announced November 1. Ms. Paul is a children's family 
literacy educator in the Family and Child Education (FACE) program at 
Blackwater Community School. FACE programs follow the national, 
four-component family literacy model and address unique educational 
and cultural needs of Native American families. Ms. Paul is a member

Free Health
Literacy Lessons
World Education has posted El Paso Community College's new health 
literacy curriculum. It's built on a five-step model of adult 
education. The curriculum includes lessons on a range of health 
issues for young and older audiences and links to other online health
