(4) Verizon Foundation Offers Literacy and Workforce
Development Grants in California and New York/
Connecticut Service Areas
Deadline: Various
The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon
Communications, supports a variety of programs that focus
on improving basic and computer literacy, bridging the
digital divide, enriching communities through technology,
and creating a skilled work force. The foundation is
currently accepting applications for grants from
nonprofits in California and New York/Connecticut under
the following programs:
California: Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations and
educational institutions, primarily in the Southern
California region, are invited to compete for $1 million
in grants for projects in literacy and work-force
development. The foundation will give strong preference to
projects that meet the following criteria: offer an
innovative program that meets the literacy or workforce
development needs of the community; benefit communities
served by Verizon; and assist nonprofits in serving
diverse racial and ethnic communities, people with
disabilities, and other underserved groups. Eligible
nonprofits may be considered for grants ranging from
$25,000 to $250,000. See the foundation's Web site for the
list of eligible cities and counties. (Deadline: May 10,
2002)
New York/Connecticut: Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations
and eligible educational institutions engaged in
efforts to improve work-force development skills are
invited to compete for $500,000 in grants. The foundation
will only consider requests that serve populations within
Verizon's New York and/or Connecticut landline service
territories. The foundation will award one-year grants,
ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 each. Proposals must
include a needs assessment and identify actual job
openings within their communities. Greater consideration
will be given to projects that can be replicated as a
"best-practice" model. (Deadline: April 17, 2002)
Review the complete guidelines and eligibility information
at the Verizon Foundation Web site. The foundation will
only accept applications for these programs through its
Web site.
