WHAT'S NEW AT THE INSTITUTE

* Institute to Partner with Mocha Moms, Inc.:

The Institute and Mocha Moms, Inc, a 3,000-member support organization for
mothers of color, today announced the beginning of an innovative partnership
to support early literacy. Mocha Moms have chosen not to work full-time
outside of the home in order to devote more time to their families.

As part of the agreement, the Institute and Mocha Moms will kick off a
yearlong, national "Take Your Child to the Library Day" campaign to help
foster a love of books and reading; and to encourage at least 500 children
in each of the target cities to apply for library cards. The Institute will
also support Mocha Moms' efforts to increase the number of parents who read
to their children while visiting beauty salons and barbershops. Institute
publications will be among the books available to parents and children in
designated reading corners of the beauty and barbershops. As an expert
resource, the Institute this month will launch a direct mailing of its early
childhood publications to Mocha Moms members in nearly 35 states.

Part I of From Assessment to Practice: Research-Based Approaches to Teaching
Reading to Adults webcast was presented on September 28, 2007. The live
webcast featured compelling rationale for the use of research-based
principles for adult reading instruction. The presenters used two components
of reading-word analysis and comprehension-as examples to illustrate
research-based practices, focusing on specific instructional strategies
derived from the research.
