Thanks to the people who have been contributing to the discussion on what it means to run into students outside of classes. I have been pondering over the issue of how we may dress a certain way when we teach our students, and how we may dress a different way when we are out in our private lives having fun or running an errand. I am specifically wondering whether it is important to have two different types of dress codes-one work related and one non work related. I know that society often dictates this, but what are the reasons behind this? What are the reasons given to students, for example, in workplace literacy classes about different types of dress codes? Is this even addressed? Are there cultural differences about what is acceptable to wear to work and what is not? What about the classroom-what dress codes are appropriate for learners? Is the dress code the same for learners as it is for their teachers and administrators? If not, why not? Any thoughts on dress codes?
