For non-literate students EL teachers might do well to take a look at the reading materials published through the Partnership for Reading, and the material developed by the Nat'l Center for Family Literacy, Applying Research in Reading Instruction for Adults. I believe the "Alphabetics" principles laid out in reading instruction are extremely applicable to language instruction. We need to be aware of what is going on in the other disciplines that can help us help our students. And don't we teach listening, speaking, reading and writing?? -Miriam Kroeger Arizona -----Original Message----- From: englishlanguage-bounces at nifl.gov [mailto:englishlanguage-bounces at nifl.gov] On Behalf Of robinschwarz1 at aol.com Sent: Monday, January 23, 2006 3:26 PM To: englishlanguage at nifl.gov Subject: Re: [EnglishLanguage] preliterate parents These sites and materials also require literacy at significant levels. The question, I believe, was about PRE-literate parents-- this means NO literacy--typically speaking a language that is not written. It is a puzzle how to present them with materials for this when they cannot read or possibly even make sense of pictures (preliterate populations have been found to interpret one dimensional information differently than literate persons do.) Perhaps emphasis should be put on developing the preliteracy skills of BOTH parents and children through songs, rhymes, picture identification, etc. --in other words, hearing the structure of English. They are simple, straightforward and should only require minor modifications for a US audience. www.basic-skills-wales.org/bsastrategy/en/early_years/lap_esol.cfm www.literacytrust.org.uk/talktoyourbaby/quicktips.html Good luck K ---------------------------------------------------- National Institute for Literacy Adult English Language Learners mailing list EnglishLanguage at nifl.gov To unsubscribe or change your subscription settings, please go to http://www.nifl.gov/mailman/listinfo/englishlanguage ---------------------------------------------------- National Institute for Literacy Adult English Language Learners mailing list EnglishLanguage at nifl.gov To unsubscribe or change your subscription settings, please go to http://www.nifl.gov/mailman/listinfo/englishlanguage
