Hello Teachers of Adult English Language Learners,
I am new to the NIL list. I teach a senior level, community-based learning class
at Portland State University in Oregon and ESL and education classes at
Clackamas Community College.
In response to Sarah's note regarding the discussion group she will be
facilitating at TESOL, a great way to use volunteers in your classroom is to
set them up as conversation partners with your ELL students. Here's a link to a
Focus on Basics article describing our project at the Portland State University
Lab School.

I hope this topic finds its way into your discussion at TESOL!

Hi all,

If you are an adult ESL instructor who has a volunteer or aide helping
you in your class, and you're not quite sure what to do with this great
resource, I'll be facilitating a discussion group at TESOL on Wednesday
morning at 7:30 a.m.to address this topic titled "Using Volunteers in
the Adult ESL Classroom." We'll talk about how we can make better use of
these volunteers who often bring a lot of enthusiasm to the classroom
but little experience.

Directly following that discussion group at 8:30 a.m., I'll be
presenting a demonstration session based on an activity I use in my
adult ESL classes titled, "Interactive Student-Generated Questioning
Techniques."

If anyone knows of some sessions at TESOL that will be addressing adult
ESL assessment/accountability, content standards, language proficiency,
adolescent ELLs, or health literacy, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks,
Sarah Young

Dear listers,

As many of you know, the 40th Annual TESOL (Teachers of English to
Speakers of Other Languages) Convention and Exhibit will be March 15-18
at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa Florida. The conference always
brings in several thousand people from around the world.

As always, there will be many presentations of interest to those who
work with adult English language learners. Sessions include

"International Perspectives on Language and Literacy to Strengthen
Families",
"Successful Tips for Adult Native Language Literacy Classroom",
"Professional Development Needs and Opportunities--Mapping and Shaping
the Future", "Perspectives on the Adult Immmigrant Experience Today",
"Refugee Families and U.S. Schools",
"Adult Refugee Students' Digital Stories of Adaptation", and
"Skill Building for Health Literacy in ESOL".

These and hundreds of other sessions will be presented.

While many practitioners do attend TESOL, many others don't have that
opportunity. I wonder whether some of you who are going to TESOL could
share with others on this list what you are planning to present or
attend? After TESOL perhaps some of you would also be willing to share
some of what you learned (or taught)?
