Hi Andrea and all, I am sorry to respond to this message so late, but I have been swamped by e-mails... I want to suggest another book about African-American ancestors even though Black History Month is over. It is still worth reading and sharing with students too. The book is: Sapelo's People: A Long Walk into Freedom by William S. McFeely [W W Norton& Company, New York London 1994] Library of Congress Cataloging-in-Publication Data Author: McFeely, William S. Title: Sapelo's people: a long walk into freedom Subject: 1. Sapelo Island (Ga.)-Historv. 2. Sapelo Island (Ga.)Civilization. ISBN 0-393-03643-X W. W. I have in front of me a book, "The Gullah--People and their African heritage." Septima Poinsette Clark was Gullah. I believe very strongly in knowing about folks' background, what groups they came from, and how they got to this country. It breeds respect. If anybody else out there has comparable books to suggest, particularly about African-Americans, I would really appreciate hearing about them. Thanks.
