Subject: [EnglishLanguage 421] web based ESL distance learning and L1literacy - the future?



About two weeks ago I posted a message concerning the
issue of communicating and working with people
interested in developing web/computer based ESL
courses.
So far I have received messages from and have
contacted people who are very involved in creating
what can generically be called Language Learning
Centers. These LLCs are geared to provide computer
classes, web based ESL classes and L1 (Spanish)
literacy classes, Citizenship, health education, etc.
There is also a growing interest in distributing
refurbished computers to low income students'
families. This approach is being accelerated in
California by a new law prohibiting people from
throwing away their old computers.
In my opinion, web/computer based ESL (and other)
distance learning programs will be very important in
the future. I suspect that sooner or later someone
will also create an ESL Sesame Street for adult
learners!
