Dear listers,

Imagine if you will, the following situations:

A rural section of a state has seen a recent, rapid increase in adult
immigrants, who have come to the area to take entry-level jobs at a
meat-packing plant. Until now, the small adult education center has
offered only adult basic education (ABE) and General Education
Development (GED) preparation classes. Any immigrants that wanted to
study took the ABE class. Now, there are enough adult English language
learners to support a class, so one of the ABE teachers- a former
middle-school math teacher-has agreed to teach the class. It will be 7
months before the yearly adult education conference, and the ESL class
begins in 3 weeks.

Q 1: What immediate help is this for this erstwhile K12 content
instructor?

And in another part of the country....

A state has organized a series of professional development activities
that will include face-to-face workshops, peer mentoring, and study
circles to begin at next summer's state adult education institute. The
state's ABE/adult ESL trainer has retired, and her replacement is
relatively new to adult ESL and knows little about professional
development

Q 2 What assistance is out there for this this novice adult ESL trainer?

A: There are two new pages on the Center for Adult English Language
Acquisition (CAELA) Web site:

For(Q1) the Math maven turned ESL instructor:
http://www.cal.org/caela/tools/instructional/CAELA.html
<http://www.cal.org/caela/tools/instructional/CAELA.html> . page gives
examples of how novice and experienced instructors might use the Web
site for self-studyFor (Q2) the rising trainer :
http://www.cal.org/caela/tools/program_development/staff_development.htm
l
<http://www.cal.org/caela/tools/program_development/staff_development.ht
ml> gives examples of how adminstrators or professional developers
could use the site for professional development.

Both of these pages can also be accessed from the CAELA homepage at
http://www.cal.org/caela <http://www.cal.org/caela> .

CAELA would be interested in any questions or comments about these
pages, so please email the list oif you have feedback for us. I'm sure
that Lynda Terrill, CAELA Web Developer, and the author of these pages
will be able to respond and answer any questions as needed ! .
