Full disclosure: I am on the Board of the Center for Plain Language. This is an exciting organization who's primary goal is to promote plain language among federal government programs - but the expertise in the organization is impressive and very relevant to those of us interested in health literacy. I think that it is important to recognize that while health represents certain special literacy problems, there is much tactically we can learn from folks who spend their lives trying to figure out how to write and speak in English so that people understand them. This is a true profession composed of linguists, technical writers and others. Anyway. I thoought you would like to know about the annual conference in case anyone is intersted in attending.
