Hello. Ginger: International Potlucks bring everyone together to celebrate.

As a reader of these conversations thanks to everyone for these list serv conversations. Today I am jumping in to contribute a game that works. One WITH One Musical Chairs.

Adults, adolescents and children can play the game. This game also works with adults only. We have
observed that people who play the game or watch as by-standers become palpably more open and
relaxed with internationals in the room whom they regarded as strangers.

One WITH One Musical Chairs is a game to bring the community together again after serving your international meal (possibly where families or people from a language group ate together in small groups).
The goal of the game is to encourage party participants to meet and then mingle after the game to
greet and compliment one another about their dishes and even ask for the recipes.

As a One WITH One staff member, I designed this game for our Festival of Lights event in 1984. When the staff members introduced the game to refugees and immigrants from twenty countries and volunteer tutors from three states, it was a hit. People who had never met someone from another continent gained confidence enough to go up to that stranger and compliment the person on her or his dish- even ask for the recipe. Every year for 20 years, adults in the program, their children, graduates of the program, volunteer adult tutors and their friends and staff members have played the game. They even ask for the game- veteran participants want to greet new participants in our tutor-mentor program One WITH One in this playful way. If you have any questions, contact me. Send feedback when you play the game. Anita and i would like to hear if you enjoyed it as much as we did and do.

I like to keep it simple. Some dishes may go bad if they are left out on
a table for an hour or more, especially if they contain seafood or
mayonnaise. If your students are going to bring perishables, it is
important to have somewhere to refrigerate them or to serve them as soon
as they arrive. Always warn students to keep this in mind when planning
your potluck.

Another idea is to have each contributor post the recipe and a short
description on the table in front of each dish and maybe to say a few
words about it before starting the feast.

We are hosting an International Potluck for our ESOL students and tutors
and are in need of some ideas for games/activities. Anyone have any
thoughts?

Thanks for your help!
