I'll be part of three presentations at TESOL.

1. The first is a pre-convention institute, Tuesday, March 20, where
CAELA staff Lynda Terrill, Kirsten Schaetzel, Sarah Young, and I talk
about "Sustained, Systematic Professional Development for Adult
Practitioners." My colleagues and I will provide info about
professsional development planning processes and resources; we'll
briefly discuss using student performance data and teacher needs and
background data to plan PD, and we will give examples and provide
practice with workshop modules, study circles, and Web-based resources
to use in providing PD.

2. The second is the academic section for the ESOL in Adult Education
Interest Section. It is on Thursday, from 2-4:45 and is titled:
"Systematic, Sustained, and Intensive Professional Development." With
Kirsten Schaetzel as facilitator, panelists Liz England, Thomas Farrell,
Federico Salas-Isnardi, and I talk about the role of needs assessment,
planning, systems development, and reflection in professional
development.

3. The third is a colloquiam on Saturday, March 24, from 2-3:45. It's
called "Professional Development Responses to Growing Immigrant
Populations. I facilitate the session, while Philip Less (AR), Janet
Isserlis (RI), Missy Slaathaug SD), and Jane Miller and Connie Davis
(CO) talk about how their states are lworking to improve the PD offered
those who work with adult English language learners through building the
state infrastructure, implementing training of trainers, using study
circles, and providing training for new instructors.

Hope to see some of you at these sessions?
Thanks. Miriam

Subject: [EnglishLanguage 1108] TESOL Convention Upcoming this month

Dear listers,

The 41st TESOL Annual Convention & Exhibit is upcoming March 21-24, 2007
at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle,
Washington. You can access the TESOL homepage at www.tesol.org
and the direct link to convention information is
http://www.tesol.org/s_tesol/seccss.asp?CID=1244&DID=6071 Here's a
quick sample of just a few presentation topics from the adult ESOL
Interest Section:

*
Hiring Part time ESOL Adult Education Teachers
*
ELCivics Making a Difference in the Community
*
A Health Literacy Curriculum for ESOL Beginners
*
Options in Transitioning Students from Adult ESL
*
Teaching ESL in Jail Settings

These and many other topics are of concern to teachers and
administrators. While many on this list will be attending TESOL, many
others won't have the opportunity.

As in years past, I hope some of you who will be presenting will share
information about your presentations for those who won't be able to
attend. I hope after TESOL that some of you can find time to share your
experiences and resources.

Thanks,

Lynda Terrill
