Dear subscribers,

Thanks so much to MaryAnn Cunningham Florez and Betsy Lindeman Wong for leading last week's very productive and informative discussion on "Practical Strategies for Working with literacy-Level Learners."

Thanks as well to the approximately 35 of you who found time to share your expertise, practical applications, resources, and questions with the rest of us. Several of you explained in detail "how" you make things work in your classes and programs, and that was what we were hoping for this time around. Finally, thanks to the many of you who often do not post to the list, but whom we know are using the list as one of their tools for teaching adult ESL.

Discussion topics ranged from ways to use picture dictionaries and visuals in general and the importance of developing a comfortable classroom environment to phonics, phonemics, and the pros and cons of reading aloud.

I will summarize the discussion and make the summary available to you-early in the new year. Meanwhile, the archives to this discussion and all NIFL discussion lists are available on the National Institute for Literacy's Web site at www.nifl.gov

Although the special discussion has officially ended, I hope you will continue to share your ideas, questions, and practical strategies for teaching adult English language learners.

Sincerely,

Lynda Terrill
