Writing is part of our cultural environment today. We are engulfed in it. To be unable to read is almost like lacking a sense. The Chinese call it letter blind.
Helping people to improve their reading skills is an important enough job. For a language or literacy teacher to worry about people's diet or character is not warranted in my view.
