I do not understand why there does not exist a massive "USA learns" portal with content on all possible subjects, consisting of stories, radio drama, children's stories, literature, history, cooking recipes, interviews, factual articles, professional content, grammar explanations, pronunciation guides etc., all with sound and transcript, and all available for free download and free distribution. This would enable immigrants and others to find content that is relevant. Teachers could use it or learners could access it on their own.

What is more, many English speakers could tell their own stories from various walks of life, and help their fellow citizens.

One such source of free content is The Linguist website. This is just a start. It could be much larger and better. But it should remain free, free to use, to download and to share with whomever.

As I have said before, the same could be done for Spanish and other languages, giving the immigrants a chance to give back.

The key is choice. Relevance is key.

Steve Kaufman
www.lingq.com
