Hello,

My name is Tom Dietvorst. I am the English as a second language adult
educator at the Toyota Family Literacy Program site at Columbian Elementary
in Denver, Colorado. I posted the information below to the Toyota Family
Literacy Program chat line some time back and Sylvia Lieshoff at NCFL asked
me to post it to this list. I was concerned that the material would not be
available outside of the circulation areas of the Denver Post and Rocky
Mountain News. I spoke with Dana Plewka of the Denver Newspaper Agency and
she assured me that there are two ways that this material is available
outside of the Denver Newspaper Agency circulation area. The "NEWSLINKS"
binder is available for $100. The Denver Newspaper Agency's, Newspapers in
Education, is also selling licenses to the program to other newspapers.

I am wondering if you are aware of a resource? In 2004 the manager of the
Denver Newspaper Agency's Educational Services department approached the
Colorado Department of Education Center for At-Risk Education. This contact
resulted in "NEWSLINKS", a 10-unit manual with over 100 newspaper related
activities. The activities are organized by life skill topics; each has
teacher instructions and reproducible student worksheets; each activity is
rated by Student Performance Level, CASAS Competency; each activity has
take-home tasks; and intergenerational literacy activities. Contact
nie at denvernewspaperagency.com for more information.
