Two articles on parental involvement appeared in yesterday's ASCD
Brief. The first offers some practical tips for schools in how to
increase parent involvement. Welcoming complainers gives a bit of a
spin to the idea of complaining parents and surely the principal
mentioned in Number 5 deserves kudos for going above and beyond.

The second article reflects on a report titled It Takes a Parent:
Transforming Education in the Wake of the No Child Left Behind Act.
If you have not read the report, you can access it below by clicking
on the word "study."

Ten ways schools can better connect with parents
Washington Post education writer Jay Mathews culls 10 tips from
educators and parents on how schools can forge better relationships
with parents. They include: Ditch confusing educational terms,
involve complainers and hire school leaders who know how to listen
and talk to parents. The Washington Post (free registration)

Study: Schools fall short in parental outreach: Schools are failing
on several fronts to communicate to parents the information they need
under NCLB or involve them in school activities, reports a recent
study by the public-interest law network Appleseed. The Washington
Post (free registration) (10/17)
