The following article from the New York Times was referenced in
yesterday's ASCD Smart Brief. It continues to underscore the
difficulties Hispanic and other immigrant parents face in being
active participants in their children's schools.
Have any of you found successful ways to increase the involvement of
Hispanic parents in their children's education? What have you done to
help English language learners meet the challenges of work
schedules, lack of transportation, and poor English skills so that
they are able to support their children's learning?
Latino parents face barriers when providing homework help
Many Latino parents work long hours, face language problems and are
more apt to acquiesce to educators, rather than involve themselves in
schools, experts say. The Newburgh, N.Y., school district is running
workshops to help immigrant parents monitor their children's homework
and get engaged in school activities. The New York Times (free
