Dear Family Literacy Community.

I am doctoral student at Penn State University in the College of Education’s
Department of Learning and Performance Systems and formerly served as a
research assistant at the Goodling Institute for Research in Family
Literacy. I am writing to ask for your help in recruiting participants to
interview for my dissertation research. The focus of my dissertation
research is fathers’ participation in family literacy programs. I am
specifically looking to recruit fathers for this study. If your program, or
any program you know, currently has fathers enrolled please contact me. If
you have any questions, would like to read the abstract of my study
proposal, or preview my formal recruitment letter, you can call me at
(814)321-3515 or write to me at EZL109 at psu.edu.

My research question is:

What is the experience of students as fathers as this is shaped by the
construction of parent(ing) in family literacy programs?

The key objectives of my study are:

1. This study will explore how students as fathers interpret and make
sense of their experiences within the context of family literacy programs by
recording their stories
2. By providing insight into the experiences of fathers participating
in family literacy programs, I will help practitioners, policy makers, and
researchers in the field better align expectations with program and policy
designs.
3. This research aims to describe how fathers respond to the
expectations of the four components of family literacy, to reveal how
fathers participating in family literacy programs process their experiences
to see how (and if) they change and learn, to contribute to the breath and
depth of the existing body or research.
4. The goal is to expand current research related to this issue beyond
the limited focus of program description.

Your help in this endeavor is greatly appreciated. Once again, if you have
any questions you can call me at (814)321-3515 or write to me at
EZL109 at psu.edu.

Kind Regards,

Eugenio Longoria Saenz
