Virginia,

Thank you for your response. Your reasons are big motivations behind the
question of my research and the reason I am focused on interviewing fathers.
If you know of any programs with fathers (even if he is the only one) please
let me know.

Kind regards,

Eugenio Longoria Sáenz

Subject: fathers

OSU (Oregon State) did a research project on our family literacy program.
Cindy Nelson at The National Center for Family Literacy has a copy of it and
the contact information for the researcher. We worked diligently to get
fathers involved. This meant that we made sure we had male staff, bilingual
male staff. That we included any male in the family: uncles, brothers,
fathers, grandfathers; that we invited them to PACT and lunch and encouraged
their support. One has to include fathers in the language of the program.
If you listen to parent educators, early childhood folks, even adult
educators: they often exclude men in their language without even being aware
of it. The program literature rarely contains male figures and females do
all the planning. Men need to be included in all the processes so that the
program fits their needs and the language is inclusive.
