ABC CANADA Family Literacy Day On January 27, families and communities across Canada will participate in ABC CANADA Family Literacy Day® (FLD). Now in its ninth year, this national initiative – created by ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation and supported by founding sponsor Honda Canada – promotes the importance of families playing and learning together to help develop literacy and numeracy skills. "Right across the country, families as well as teachers, librarians and literacy organizations celebrate this special day by reading aloud, singing songs, or playing games that are both fun and build literacy skills,” says Margaret Eaton, President, ABC CANADA. Special events planned range from celebrity story readings and writing contests, to fundraisers, book drives and reading circle pyjama parties, There is even the chance for a lucky Canadian family to win a special visit from Robert Munsch, celebrated Canadian children’s author and Honorary Chair of FLD. For information on events in your community, literacy tips, activity ideas and a list of FLD promotional materials available from ABC CANADA, visit http:// www.abc-canada.org/ If you visit the Web site listed above, click on Find Out More about ABC Family Literacy Day, scroll down to the bottom of the page--About This Site--and click on Parents and Families for ideas for some fun activities, as well as some family literacy facts and some family literacy links.
