Hi Ujwala

Thanks for your suggestions. I don't know the two Indian films you
mentioned, but I can see how using film clips from "The Color Purple"
could be effective with students.

I watched a teacher of adult GED students show segments from "West Side
Story" during a class to introduce a reading from "Romeo and Juliet."
Students who had groaned at the thought of reading any Shakespeare were
eager to do so after watching the film clip.

Dear All,

I've often used clips from a variety of films to show
a lack of literacy and the acquisition of literacy, as
well as how non-literates are treated. Among these
are, The Colour Purple, Spices (an Indian film),
Anpadh (Indian film), there was a film with Jane Fonda
and DeNiro, and others.

All these opened up dialogue on learners' perceptions
of self, experiences, nods of recognition etc.

Regards
Ujwala
