[FamilyLiteracy 507] resources for family literacy and healthMarg Rose bcmrose at telus.netThu Jan 18 22:10:36 EST 2007
You might want to contact Bookmates Family Literacy Centre. They just created a program called Alphabet Soup, which combines literacy and nutrition learning. Contact Exec Director Terrie Moar in Winnipeg, Manitoba at bookmate at mts.net Another superb program that is built around the Nobody's Perfect parenting program but with a family literacy twist, is the Literacy and Parenting Skills program out of the Further Education Society in Alberta. They have adapted the core program for aboriginal parents, immigrants with an ESL enrichment module, and francophone (Grandir avec mon enfant). More info at http://www.nald.ca/fesa/programs.htm A third program is the StorySacks program that originated in England, which cuold feature health-related titles and mobilize a community to produce books, question sheets, resource listings, puppets etc to really make a concept come to life. www.storysacks.nald.ca More ideas on the National Adult Literacy Database at www.nald.ca Just type in "Health literacy" or "Family Literacy and Health" into the search engine, or go to their full text documents pull down menu. I don't know the two Indian films you mentioned, but I can see how using film clips from "The Color Purple" could be effective with students. I watched a teacher of adult GED students show segments from "West Side Story" during a class to introduce a reading from "Romeo and Juliet." Students who had groaned at the thought of reading any Shakespeare were eager to do so after watching the film clip. Gail J. Price Multimedia Specialist National Center for Family Literacy 325 W. Among these are, The Colour Purple, Spices (an Indian film), Anpadh (Indian film), there was a film with Jane Fonda and DeNiro, and others. All these opened up dialogue on learners' perceptions of self, experiences, nods of recognition etc. Regards Ujwala ________________________________________________________________________ ____________ Food fight?
