[FamilyLiteracy 529] Re: Motivating Parents To Read To Their ChildrenJessica Fitzpatrick jbfitz at optonline.netTue Jan 30 21:57:25 EST 2007
There is a very wonderful video called "Reading to Babies" from www.readtome.org . It shows many different parents from a variety of ethnic groups and backgrounds reading with their very young children and shows close-ups of the children responding. There is a minimum of talk - the pictures say a great deal about the joys of reading to young children. I think it is quite motivational and allows for follow-up discussion. It is about 18 minutes. Also, reading aloud to parents is a good motivator. They get to experience the pleasure that their children feel. For many parents it's a new experience. Also a good jumping off point. Some thoughts that may be helpful.
