[FamilyLiteracy 530] Determining Readability

Hello Adult and Parent Educators - Adult Basic Education/GED,

I'm interested to learn how your ABE/GED program determines readability of materials that you use with adult learners in your ABE or GED instruction--or how you do it individually.

Do you use a formula/measure/index such as Fry, Fog, FORCAST, Lexiles, Dale-Chall, or other?

Or do you take a holistic approach -- reading a passage yourself and getting a sense as to whether the vocabulary, expressions, sentence structure, length, required background knowledge, etc. would match your students' skill levels?

What works--what doesn't? What's worth the effort?

Thanks for your thoughts on this. My organization trains adult literacy tutors and some occasionally ask for specific tools to determine readability.
