Regarding outcomes
..a little of both

I run and coordinate an 8 week family literacy program
it is a 2 hour / 2
times per week
..it is funded by our local welfare agency and parents who
are recruited to come to the class with their children (infants – age 6)
must complete evaluations for us at mid point and final. WE also have the
child care workers who work with the children for the first hour (as the
second hour they are with us and their parents) do an evaluation, host site,
caseworkers who sometimes refer the parents to us
.we target parents who
have low literacy skills – we recruit parents by putting a flyer in their
monthly cheque
.this helps us to target parents from low SES who often have
low literacy skills (but not always). So we gather a lot of evaluation data
but it is not specifically outcome-based.

We are now looking at a different way to evaluate more of an outcomes-based
evaluation. I will be learning more about it in the weeks to come. If you
want more information, just let me know.

Subject: [FamilyLiteracy 537] Evaluating Outcomes

The following two requests were submitted by Sara Mansbach in my
pre-Christmas solicitation of ideas and suggestions for discussions on the
Family Literacy Discussion List. Since they both had to do with evaluation,
I am posting them together. However, in your response please indicate which
item you are responding to as your suggestions may not be the same for both.

Evaluation of outcomes is an important part of any literacy program and
certainly one that we need to continue building and strengthening in adult
education. I am sure not only Sara, but the entire List would be glad to
here your thoughts on these two requests.

Again, on behalf of Sara Mansbach, I submit the following for your
consideration.

I would be interested in learning more about:

1. Evaluating the outcomes of less intense family literacy programs
where parents may be seen from one month to the next for only ½ an hour at
a time, again with newborns to 4 year old children who are not very verbal
and where formal evaluation measures can not be employed.

2. Evaluating the impact of short term intense workshops on teen
mothers over a 6 weeks period of time
