Subject: [FamilyLiteracy 575] Re: unintendend outcomes

We have also seen lots of unitended outcomes especially positive ones emerge
from our family literacy efforts. Since we are community/state supported
through collaborations and are limited in funding we cannot house numerous
"components" as other federal or grant supported programs might. However
despite what might be perceived as obstacles, the opportunity to enrich
children starting with families has been eye opening. Our state-funded
preschool includes PACT in the schedule every morning
and from this wonderful involvement our preschool staff had the idea to
start a parent resource library that basically included curriculum books,
early childhood books, and books with tapes and games. What started as a
couple of books and items in the corner is now bustling with activity and is
completely parent managed at the same time supporting home-based learning!
While home-based instruction can be very consuming in terms of resources for
some programs, we stumbled upon it just allowing
our parents and children to "take the lead" which is great.
