Here is a great resource for Family Literacy and the homeless.

Education for Homeless Adults (Volume III): Family Literacy and More Lessons addresses the specific needs and challenges of providing education to homeless people. This particular volume presents a family literacy approach. Adult Education Act, Section 353, #01-02-94-7750

I'm coordinator of the Interfaith Hospitality Network at Temple Beth-El in Hillsborough NJ. Our volunteers read regularly to the children in our rotating shelter and we help with homework as well. We always have lots of lots of books for the children and adults. The organization works with each family to make sure they have all the skills needed to get housing and jobs (when needed) and be successful.

A California newspaper recently carried a story that began:

"Every Wednesday evening, Anna Dewey arrives at the Circle of Hope Family Shelter loaded down with blankets and books. She spreads out her blankets on the concrete floor in a corner of the shelter's family room and gathers the children together for story time."

It is an interesting story about a teen and her family who are reading and tutoring in a homeless shelter. If you are interested you can read more about how this teen champions literacy at the homeless shelter. http://www.pe.com/localnews/corona/stories/PE_News_Local_C_ctutor11.15b0d39.html

Are any of you working with the homeless? Perhaps you would share your experiences with us.
