In Virginia, through the Adult Learning Resource Center, we are in the last
year of a 3 year project to create an online financial literacy curriculum
for adult ESOL. During our research phase of the project, we found that
while there were a great many wonderful resources for native speakers, there
was almost nothing for adult ESOL. Instead of reinventing the wheel, we took
the best of the little we found and made it better and digitized it. We have
developed lessons, available online for all to use, for beginner to advanced
level students on topics ranging from simple banking services to budgeting,
loans and credit. We have piloted the materials in two Virginia counties
with great success. The lessons include well-crafted, humorous, pictures
stories to inspire the use of the four language skills. We will complete the
online curriculum, and develop an online teacher training module during this
coming year. You can access the materials now to take a look, though they
are not yet in their final form, at http://www.valrc.org/courses/moneytalks.

Each lesson includes links to other resources for either teacher and or
student use. We make wide use of the free materials at the Practical Money
Skills website at http://practicalmoneyskills.com
<http://practicalmoneyskills.com/> . The site has great information to help
teachers understand financial literacy topics, and dozens of ready-to-use
lessons (for native speakers) at all levels (children to adults and
parents). We like the calculators which we plan to incorporate into several
web-based ESOL lessons for students.

If you work in adult ESOL and have some financial literacy resources to
share, we would be interested in hearing about them.
