Important world events are remembered during the month of August:
Vesuvius erupted, burying Pompeii and Herculaneum; the Polish Army
rebelled against Hitler's occupation of Warsaw; the deadliest battle of
World War II (for Stalingrad) began; atomic bombs were dropped on
Hiroshima and Nagasaki; and Jack Broughton (a Brit) devised boxing rules
(in 1743) for the sport. Learn the details of those, and other events,
in this summary of August Highlights.
