I completed my dissertation last year on our family literacy program in San
Diego called Community Based English Tutoring (CBET). I referenced a lot of
family literacy authors, and listed below are some of the authors I think are
very prominent in the family literacy field:

Sharon Darling
Barbara Wasik
Virginia Gadsden
Jeanne Paratore
Denny Taylor

These are just a few family literacy authors of the 13 pages of references in
my dissertation on family literacy. There are a whole list of historical
names in family literacy and current research includes many more authors.
The research studies in family literacy are really exciting to read.

If we are going to talk about family literacy, we certainly must include
Sharon Darling!

Could we add the names of those who have been prominent in in adult
literacy and family literacy? Who do you think of in these areas?

Tom Sticht in his Seven Pioneering Adult Literacy Educators in the
History of Teaching Reading with Adults in the United States tells us about:
the teaching innovations introduced by each of these pioneers:

Harriet Jacobs
Cora Wilson Stewart
J. Duncan Spaeth
Frank C. Laubach
Paul A. Witty
Francis P. Robinson
Septima Poinsette Clark

I consider Dr. Susan B. Neuman a big name in early literacy. She is
currently a professor at University of Michigan. We brought her to Miami for
PD with early childhood, pre-k and kindergarten teachers, and for a
presentation for parents at one of our family learning events. She is
fabulous.

I am curious who you would consider to be big names in literacy, both
historically and currently?
