Re: [FamilyLiteracy 909] Re: Big Names in Literacy?Though not technically in the category of adult literacy, I might nominate for notable mention Raymond Wlodkowski, who studies all forms of adult education (not just literacy). In 1999, he published the book Enhancing Adult Motivation to Learn: A Comprehensive Guide for Teaching All Adults.

Similarly, one might mention Sharan B. Merriam and Rosemary S. Caffarella, who have recently published a third edition of Learning in Adulthood.

If we are going to talk about family literacy, we certainly must include Sharon Darling!

Could we add the names of those who have been prominent in in adult literacy and family literacy? Who do you think of in these areas?

Tom Sticht in his Seven Pioneering Adult Literacy Educators in the History of Teaching Reading with Adults in the United States tells us about: the teaching innovations introduced by each of these pioneers:

Harriet Jacobs
Cora Wilson Stewart
J. Duncan Spaeth
Frank C. Laubach

I consider Dr. Susan B. Neuman a big name in early literacy. She is currently a professor at University of Michigan. We brought her to Miami for PD with early childhood, pre-k and kindergarten teachers, and for a presentation for parents at one of our family learning events. She is fabulous.

I am curious who you would consider to be big names in literacy, both historically and currently?
