[FamilyLiteracy 921] Re: Big Names in Literacy?jalsails at aol.com jalsails at aol.comWed Jan 9 11:20:14 EST 2008
Hi, Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a forum where many of these leaders come together to discuss the present state and future direction of family literacy? What questions would we as policy makers, project planners, practitioners in the field, and program evaluators pose? What action could such an event generate? Think about what happened to the reading field as a result of the National Reading Panel. Is it time to rethink family literacy designs and roles as an intergenerational educational intervention? We've swung back and forth from "first meet the needs of the adult learner/parent/guardian" to "prioritize performance outcomes for young children" - according to recent research, much of it done by these "big names in literacy" can we begin to think of fresh designs in terms of what works best in terms of targeted families' goals and are viable funding concepts? Where are we now? Where do we need to go next? Jeri Levesque, Ed.D. She is currently a professor at University of Michigan. We brought her to Miami for PD with early childhood, pre-k and kindergarten teachers, and for a presentation for parents at one of our family learning events. She is fabulous.
