Colleagues,
The article, "Books Open up Worlds," from the Calgary Herald on
family literacy in Canada intrigues me. I was intrigued to learn that
family literacy got a huge boost in Canada from a made-for-TV movie.
I like the airplane oxygen mask analogy used by ABC Canada president,
Margaret Eaton. (I'll use that when talking with legislators in the
U.S.!) I especially like the succinct description by Calgary Reads
executive director, Dariel Bateman, of how one of the three most
important ways that parents can help their children with reading
readiness is by how they talk with them.
