David,

Thank you so much for bringing this article to everyone's attention. I
think it does an excellent job of emphasizing how literacy is a
cross-generational endeavor and that helping your kids become literate
can be built into everyday activities. This is such an important
point--helping parents and families realize that literacy activities can
be integrated and not "one more thing" for them to do.

Thanks!

Subject: [FamilyLiteracy 943] Books Open Up Worlds

Colleagues,

The article, "Books Open up Worlds," from the Calgary Herald on
family literacy in Canada intrigues me. I was intrigued to learn that
family literacy got a huge boost in Canada from a made-for-TV movie.
I like the airplane oxygen mask analogy used by ABC Canada president,
Margaret Eaton. (I'll use that when talking with legislators in the
U.S.!) I especially like the succinct description by Calgary Reads
executive director, Dariel Bateman, of how one of the three most
important ways that parents can help their children with reading
readiness is by how they talk with them.
