Friday's OELA Newsline referenced a recent issue of the School Library
Journal, which contained an article about "an initiative by the
Institute of Museum and Library Services to encourage reading during the
summer months.... Many libraries across the nation are participating in
the National Collaborative Summer Library Program, Catch the Reading
Bug. " The article is available for you to read at

I think the research on "summer slide" has mostly centered around
children and I wondered about adults. If your program closes in the
summer, do you find adult learners have "lost" some learning when they
return to class? What do you do to help adults maintain their learning
levels?

What kinds of suggestions do you make to them so that they can "hold,"
or move forward with, their current learning? Do you give them reading
and math materials, point them to computer programs, have special family
nights devoted to learning parenting skills? And what do you suggest
they do to support their children's learning throughout the summer?

Would you share with the list some of the things you do to prevent
"summer slide." It is always good to hear practical ideas from those of
you who have so many "tried and true" ones.
