Gail,
Thank you once again for moderating the NIFL-family list. It has been a
tremendous resource for family literacy practitioners across North America!
*My question now is to NIFL itself*:
*Why can't there be a Family Literacy Resource Collection?*
I am only just discovering that according to the NIFL website
http://www.nifl.gov/lincs/resourcecollections/resource_collections.html,
there are 3 Resource Collections.
*1. "Basic Skills"*
- Reading
- Writing
- Mathematics
- Numeracy
*2. "Program Management"*
- Assessment
- Learning Disabilities
- Program Improvement
*3. "Workforce Competitiveness"*
- Workforce basic skills education
- English language acquisition
- Technology
---------
I am puzzled by this categorization.
- English language acquisition is not listed as a "Basic Skill" but rather
as "Workforce Competitiveness" - vice versa for Numeracy. These may
be defensible choices, but many would disagree with them.
- Learning Disabilities is listed under Program Management. Certainly,
Family Literacy aligns at least as much with Program Management as Learning
Disabilities does. Wouldn't Family Literacy fit perfectly here?
- Health Literacy is a discussion list even though, according to this
page it is not "aligned" with any of the 3 Resource Collections on the
Resource Collections page.
Thus, the statement that the Family Literacy list needs to be eliminated
because it does not "align with" the Resource Collections, is not, in
fact, an explanation. NIFL can make Family Literacy a part of the Resource
Collections any day. The question is why won't it?
Hope NIFL will reconsider!
