NO MAGIC BULLET: Lessons from Medical Historian Allan Brandt
What do venereal disease, AIDS prevention, tobacco control, obesity and Avian Flu have in common? What have we learned from one epidemic that we can apply to others? What are the pitfalls of assuming that all disease epidemics are alike?
Medical historian Dr. Allan Brandt explores the differences in epidemics from the perspective of social history. In his book, No Magic Bullet, Dr. Brandt illustrates the consequences of flawed policy, poor health communication, and social stigma on reducing the effectiveness of drugs and treatment (such as penicillin in eradicating venereal disease in America). Dr. Brandt, after reflecting on new lessons emerging from the AIDS epidemic worldwide, is currently working on a history of tobacco prevention. He will be joined by Dr.
Susan Zimicki, whose present work centers on communication about Avian Flu, and Dr. Silvio Waisbord, who works on TB eradication and will help compare and contrast large global efforts of communication and public education. Join us for a lively discussion!
