Thank you, Laurie!
By the way, the article she's talking about is from a publication called
Focus on Basics, which connects research to practice for adult literacy
practitioners. An article from past issues is highlighted each Tuesday
on the Focus on Basics discussion list, and this week's FOB
Article-of-the-Week is:
A Conversation With FOB: Addressing Racism, Classism and Gender in ABE
http://www.ncsall.net/index.php?id=206
For those of you interested in these issues, there is also a new
discussion list from the National Institute for Literacy called Poverty,
Race, Women and Literacy. I imagine they share many issues of interest
to us on this list, so I will keep tuned into this list and share
relevant information with you all!
You can get more information about all these discussion lists at:
http://www.nifl.gov/lincs/discussions/discussions.html
Sorry to add a plug here--I'd love to hear more reasons for thanks!
All the best,
Julie

A Happy Thanksgiving to you and you family, Julie!
And thank you for re-issuing that wonderful article earlier from FOB on
race, class and gender, on the other lists. The best Thanksgiving
blessing ever! I've been sharing it with many others, and it's very
timely. I really loved it, not having read it before.

Hi Everyone,
The list has been quiet, but I want to check in and let you know that
we
will start having a Wednesday Question. Every Wednesday, I will put
out
a question on the list that might be interesting to share thoughts and
information about. Please e-mail me if you have suggestions.
Today I hope most of you are winding down for a long weekend, but in
honor of Thanksgiving, I will put out this informal first Wednesday
Question:
What are you thankful for in terms of our field moving forward?
I am thankful that there is such growth lately of forums for
discussion
and action in supporting healthliteracy in this country. I see people
from many different disciplines talking about it. I see conferences,
books, government publications, teachers addressing the issue, and the
addition of health literacy questions on the latest National
Assessment
of Adult Literacy. I think we have taken many steps forward and am
thankful for that.
What about you all?
Have a warm and healthy Thanksgiving!
All the best,
Julie
