Julie and All: I recently attended an invitational conference of health
literacy researchers and federal staff of NIH institutes and other agencies
currently funding health literacy research. I came away thankful that the
field now has a strong multidisciplinary group of active researchers well
supported by passionate advocates and funders in high places. There are some
excellent projects underway and openness to new perspectives evidenced by a
new research mechanism (R-21) for innovative projects. We are moving
forward, expanding the scope, and gaining momentum. Thanks for your
contributions. Please keep discussing the issues - everything that happens
happens in conversation. SS

Subject: [HealthLiteracy 472] Wednesday Question: Giving Thanks

Hi Everyone,
The list has been quiet, but I want to check in and let you know that we
will start having a Wednesday Question. Every Wednesday, I will put out
a question on the list that might be interesting to share thoughts and
information about. Please e-mail me if you have suggestions.

Today I hope most of you are winding down for a long weekend, but in
honor of Thanksgiving, I will put out this informal first Wednesday
Question:

What are you thankful for in terms of our field moving forward?

I am thankful that there is such growth lately of forums for discussion
and action in supporting healthliteracy in this country. I see people
from many different disciplines talking about it. I see conferences,
books, government publications, teachers addressing the issue, and the
addition of health literacy questions on the latest National Assessment
of Adult Literacy. I think we have taken many steps forward and am
thankful for that.

What about you all?

Have a warm and healthy Thanksgiving!

All the best,
Julie
