Hi! We have used the "What to Do..." series from the Institute for Healthcare Advancement with Head Start and Early Head Start moms with a great deal of success. These materials are written at about a 3rd grade level and include a very detailed curriculum and training guide to help individuals with low literacy understand and use the guides. The families we have worked with found the materials and workshops extremely helpful, and we have multiple success stories to report from "crisis averted" to "more confident in taking care of my child's health.' We have also used this series with parents of children in ESOL classes in our community, also with great success and appreciation of the parents. Happy to share additional details, if anyone is interested... Our training and curriculum helps health educators understand how to use adult literacy teaching strategies when working with underserved expecting women either one-on-one or during group education. We help moms learn how to look up information in a book, make plans for nutrition and breastfeeding decisions, and write down questions for their provider. We are right now working on the Family's First Year Basics book and health literacy program that will include baby and family nutrition and a complete breastfeeding resource - as well as curriculum training etc. Take a look at our website www.whattoexpect.org .
