Hi Everyone

I think the States and Territories of Australia are in very much the same boat. Although I would suggest that we are maybe not as advanced as the US in our understanding of, and activities to do with, health literacy. I'm nearing the end of my first year of a PhD in health literacy and would love to co-ordinate something statewide (as an adjunct to my studies) to address the knowledge gap in this area as well as facilitate the sorts of activities I read about on this discussion list - a HL Month in Tasmania/Australia would be the ultimate!

So, I too am very interested in hearing peoples responses to Julie's question as well as any specific suggestions people might have as to how I progress my thoughts outlined above.

I look forward to what may arrive on my screen!

Warm regards from Tassie
Winny

Subject: [HealthLiteracy 3633] Wednesday Question: State Support for Health Literacy

Hi Everyone,

Well, it's been a very chatty October for us so far! (Lots of good
stuff!) And things have quieted enough for me to post a Wednesday
Question without clogging your mailboxes too much.

Many states have one or more health literacy activities going on, in
varying degrees of scope. But health literacy does not have any
overseeing organization to organize and share the work within each state
and among states. The adult literacy field has state directors, and
there is a department of public health in each state, along with many
other state-organized agencies that interact in various ways with health
literacy.

So my question is: If some kind of state organization were to help
coordinate the health literacy activities in each state and share with
other states, what kind of structure and support activities would be
helpful? I'm going to leave it very open, and would love to hear any
comments.

All the best,
Julie
