[LearningDisabilities] Adult ed & developmental ed (and LD??)Susan Jones SUJones at parkland.eduWed Feb 22 21:07:59 EST 2006
Sigh, here's the message I just send to my developmental ed list by mistake (so they're wondering what page *I'm* coming from!) ... http://www.caalusa.org/boylanpaper.pdf is a lengthy article about collaboration between adult ed and developmental ed. I'd read a briefer article by Hunter Boylan about the same topic; I did a search ... "disabilties" shows up twice in the footnotes; disability doesn't appear at all. Other 'risk' factors/ potential barriers to success are mentioned such as socioeconomic status so that students could afford to repeat courses if they need more time to get prepared for college level work, and background knowledge. There's much acknowledgement of a "grey area" where skills & strategy levels overlap in the "upper" adult ed and the "lower" developmental ed (with, I hope, the understanding that it's not a linear spectrum so it's a mottled greyness, even). I'm starting to remember doing a similar search in some compilations of "must reading for developmental educators" - I'll have to do it again. I believe the only mention was in reference to students who were concerned that they had a learning disability, but "in fact," once they got some confidence, soon stopped being concerned. I know a lot of these educators - they're ready and willing to learn. Now, to ferment around the infrastructures so to make it possible... (I am talking with our task force that's re-organizing our student support services several times a week).
