[LearningDisabilities] 29 yr old man who needs on line resoursesAngela Aprea advocateaprea at yahoo.comSat Mar 11 11:54:07 EST 2006
Carol, Thanks! This may be just the thing. Do you know if it will help him with spelling also? I called IDA. I will try to locate a tutor before making any purchase. I will have to wait until after the IDA conference before obtaining the list of tutors. I purchased it at an LDA conference a few years ago, and just about every student who uses it feels it is helpful. Some have even purchased it and use it at home. It as 262 lessons and begins with the sounds of the letters, then moves on to one syllable, then two syllable, etc. It breaks each word into phonemes. When words have more than one syllable it breaks the words into syllables, then sounds within the syllables. Students can click on each sound and hear it, or they can click on the syllable and hear that. It gives a number of examples for each of the sounds. It also provides rules as to why certain letter combinations have sounds very unlike what the individual letter sounds are. The software can be purchased through New Reader's Press and costs about $110.00 plus shipping. Of course, nothing will replace a qualified tutor, but it does help until one is available. As with everything, students need to know that someone is there to answer questions they may have. I will call IDA in the morning and look further into Lexia. The young man, read these e mails quite easily (He had problems sounding out the last syllable of the word conference, so I would guess he reads on less than a 6th grade level). He told me much of his problems, and anxiety, are around writing and spelling. . He is coordinated, athletic, musical, has a good vocabulary and memory...so I wonder the extent of his LD or dyslexia...however, I am not an expert. I appreciate the many replies and am still sorting through them. "Mary S. Kelly" <mskelly at aecom.yu.edu> wrote: I have two suggestions. One is to call the New York Branch of the International Dyslexia Association at 212-691-1930. They have referral lists of tutors who are familiar with multisensory instruction and who probably have the professional background this gentleman needs. You might also want to look at the Lexia program ( www.lexialearning.com). This is an excellent program for building decoding skills. I feel, though, that it helps to have a teacher to work with as well. Best of luck. Mary S. This man has tested with a high I Q in childhood and makes a good living with his hands as an adult. He feels that he must live with card that life has dealt him and says that he has tried many programs but cannot succeed . He has agreed to one more try...perhaps an on line course or tutor.
