Ms. Kenyon: As a Special Education administrator in the Missouri Department of Corrections and as a classroom teacher I have encountered many of these students. Most of our students have encountered academic failure at an early age and dropped out of school by the ninth grade. The vast majority of special ed students in our system have some type of memory problem with varying degrees of severity. An LD student with memory processing problems may have difficulty processing a long list of directions. For example, if an child with an LD is instructed to see the bailiff, pay his fine at the payment window, and see his probation officer, more than likely only the first or last instruction will be complied with because that is what is processed. Also these students are so in the moment, particularly the ones with ADHD, that they might not understand what is happening to them. They are happy to comply with directives just as long as their immediate needs are met. Several of my students have signed documents given to them by their lawyer (authority figure) out of a desire to get the process over with. They wind up in jail with little understanding of what happened. _____ From: RKenyon721 at aol.com [mailto:RKenyon721 at aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, March 22, 2006 4:31 PM To: LearningDisabilities at nifl.gov Subject: [LearningDisabilities 366] Fwd: Juvenile Justice Presentation--LDA, Jacksonville Hi all, I am forwarding a response to the post about the LDA Conference from Lynn Boza.
