I am pleased to announce a guest speaker discussion next week on the Health & Literacy Discussion List! What: Using pictures in low literacy health education materials. When: January 8-12, 2007 Who: Guest speakers are Len and Ceci Doak and Dr. Peter Houts, health literacy researchers and advocates. Where: Online on the Health & Literacy Discussion List Why: Members on this list have shown much interest in creating health education materials appropriate for patients with low literacy skills, and in the use of pictures to enhance these materials. Len and Ceci Doak and Dr. Peter Houts have just published an article called "The role of pictures in improving health communication: A review of research on attention, comprehension, recall, and adherence." in the journal "Patient Education and Counseling", and the Doaks are authors of "Teaching Patients With Low Literacy Skills", which describes some of the earliest health literacy research, along with practical techniques for communicating clearly with patients.
