A good strategy is for them to talk and write about their personal experiences, their history, their struggles as immigrants, etc. They have fascinating stories to tell. Take a look at: http://bordersenses.com/memorias The above collections have been written by immigrant students. Click on the books on the right hand side to see the stories and poems. While they are written in Spanish, some have been translated. Some of my fellow correctional educators and I are participating in a class on teaching the adult correctional (prison) student. We have identified a question in our studies that we would like for the members of the list serve to help us answer. "What instructional strategies have been found effective or are being experimented with in teaching the undocumented adult special education learner in such areas as: reintegration skills, retention skills, or general study skills?" Our students are incarcerated in correctional facilities throughout the central United States. We welcome any idea, comment or encouragement that the participants in the list serve may be able to direct to us.
