Thank You, Candyce your response was very helpful >>> "Rennegarbe, Candyce" <crennegarbe at tacomacc.edu> 4/10/2007 5:25 PM >>> Through support from our State Office of Adult Basic Education and Israel Mendoza, Washington State ABE programs have developed * A screening process for identifying ld and at risk students * A training process for screeners or points of contact within ABE programs who meet with students to do the screening and discuss strategies * A certification process to train learning specialists who can provide free or low cost learning evaluations for students who need GED accommodations. This training was modeled on the California Eligibility Model and adds a sign off by a licensed psychologist. * Trainings facilitated by learning specialists for faculty on universal design, memory strategies, study strategies, etc. What we don't have in Washington is state policy that funds these positions on a regular basis within our community colleges where our ABE programs reside. This is where we are stuck. What we have learned is that the issue can't be changed unless we approach it systemically and state wide. We have also learned that the issue is broader than providing assistance for ABE students - it is about providing assistance for all adults who need help. The Department of Education Grant on Universal Design Learning in Washington at Renton Technical College in its fifth year has also provided a big picture change in the way we are able to work with all students.
