Carole, you hit the nail on the head. I teach an ABE/GED class as well as tutor children and adults. I am a certified O-G trainer and do the tutor training for READ Polk and the Lake Wales Literacy Council. Referring to #6 on Glenn's list, since learning to read is a process and phonemic awareness is a necessary part of the process, teaching reading, especially to those with language proscessing problems, needs to begin with phonemic awareness activities and continue throughout the teaching process which heavily involves phonics. This and teaching the student to organize information for storage and retrieval are critical tasks for the tutor, whether s/he be tutoring children or adults. I will work on an article involving the subject of "Strategies" to use in Adult Basic Education classes. Betsy S.
