Hi Meridith,

I have used Reading Horizons in the past, but I personally prefer
Lexia's Reading Strategies for Older Students for a phonic based
program. Any "beginning reader, or LD reader" may need some personal
instruction from a teacher, but this software is very good for
practice.

For basic skills, I chose Contemporary Books, Basic Skills software.
all the subject areas are covered at a "pre GED " level, and the
teaching components are pretty good. Good diagrams, maps, etc. for
students who have some reading skills and can easily use the software.
Contemporary Books is a division of McGraw Hill , I believe. There is
also a good "record keeping" component.
